What caused my back pain?

There are several causes of back pain, and determining the underlying cause can be difficult. Fortunately, our highly trained physical therapist can assist you in determining all of the factors causing your condition and developing a comprehensive plan to address them all!

Our physical therapists at Connections Physical Therapy in Acton, Amesbury, Westwood, North Grafton, Groton, Harvard, Holliston, Leominster, Mansfield, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Oxford, Pepperell, Salisbury, Wellesley, Worcester, MA and Portsmouth, RI treat all types of back pain. The following are some of the most common causes of back pain:

Poor Posture and Prolonged Positions

Our spines are built to move. Poor posture/prolonged positions are one of the most common causes of back pain. Our modern society is much more sedentary than previous generations, and the prevalence of back pain is increasing.

Back pain from poor posture is frequently associated with prolonged activities such as sitting and standing. Maintaining a posture can irritate the tissues in your body, resulting in pain, dysfunction, and, in the long run, inflammation or injury.

Sprain/Strain

A back sprain occurs when the ligaments in your spine are overstretched, whereas a back strain occurs when your back muscles are overstretched. These injuries are frequently associated with a lifting injury or an accident (i.e., motor vehicle accident, slip, or fall).

Bulging or Herniated Discs

Discs are specialized tissues that connect two vertebrae (i.e., spine bones). The discs help direct the movement of our spines, absorb forces, and protect the bones from injury.

Bending and twisting movements are particularly dangerous to the discs, especially when lifting in these positions. The disc is also vulnerable to prolonged sitting or awkward task postures.

Injury to the discs can cause severe back pain and lead to a more serious condition known as radiculopathy (nerve pain) in your thigh, leg, or foot (aka sciatica).

The good news is that physical therapy at our Acton, Amesbury, Westwood, North Grafton, Groton, Harvard, Holliston, Leominster, Mansfield, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Oxford, Pepperell, Salisbury, Wellesley, Worcester, MA Centers and Portsmouth, RI clinic can help you if you are suffering from back pain caused by disc problems.

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

Another common cause of back pain is degenerative disc disease, which is most commonly associated with aging. Degenerative changes can also be caused by smoking, certain medications, and injury.

Pain from degenerative disc disease frequently manifests as changes in mobility and is commonly felt when initiating movement after a prolonged position (i.e., sitting, standing, or lying).

People frequently describe a dull, painful ache in the lower back that worsens with prolonged standing or walking.

Whatever the cause of your back pain, our Connections Physical Therapy physical therapists can help you get to the bottom of it and, more importantly, give you the tools you need to get rid of it!

Jessica was very pleasant and knowledgeable in her trade. I went with a stiff lower back and muscle weakness in my legs. She gave me some stretching exercises, which improved the tightness in my back and legs.

I have a Spondylolisthesis on my lower back and I usually get 4 injections every 6 months. I started PT for my back after my shoulder therapy. Today, I finished my back PT and was discharged. I haven’t felt this good in a very long time and it’s all because of Chelsea!! She is a ONE OF A KIND type person, and I’m am so thankful to have had her as my Physical Therapist.

– Janet M.

I had a pretty significant fall on the icy snow and had severe immobility in my lower back that complicated itself into my upper back. I was in quite a bit of pain and overcompensating to try to improve and making things far worse. Steve listened to what happened, diagnosed my condition very quickly and put a regimented program together for 4 sessions that got me back on track, feeling like myself again and pain free.

– Jeff G.

I have been seeing Katie Lee for several weeks having had a back problem. She listened carefully to my description of this issue and has prescribed a number of exercises to strengthen and support my back. The pain is abated and I feel much better.
